ISB News Report
Covering Agricultural And Environmental Biotechnology Developments

Monthly

The News Report holds a unique place among biotechnology publications. Written in a style that is readable yet scientifically accurate, each issue contains a selection of original articles reporting research news drawn from scientific literature or from scientists who contribute reviews of their research in various disciplines of agricultural biotechnology. There are regular features on industry news, regulatory and legal issues, international developments, and Internet resources, as well as pertinent news releases and announcements gathered from government, industry, and news agency sources. Articles written by leading professionals from the academic, corporate, regulatory, and public sectors provide a balanced, multi-perspective look at complex and sometimes controversial subjects.

Print or e-mail subscriptions are available by following instructions on the News Report Subscription Page. The Report is free of charge. For quantity orders, see ISB Brochure below.

A Practical Guide to Containment
Greenhouse Research with Transgenic Plants and Microbes

July, 2001

Information about handling transgenic plants in greenhouses is relatively sparse. Appendix P of the NIH Guidelines specifies facilities and practices for meeting containment standards appropriate for each of four biosafety levels, but there presently is no single source of practical guidance on managing greenhouses containing GMOs, nor on the requirements for building or renovating plant growth facilities to make them suitable for containing transgenic plants and associated organisms.

This 60-page Guide is intended as a simple and convenient reference on appropriate biosafety and containment levels for GMO research conducted in greenhouses. It will help clarify what level of containment is needed and what measures are sufficient to achieve the various biosafety levels. This Guide was written so that anyone who works in a greenhouse that houses transgenic materials will be better informed about the purpose of containment, the variety of methods used to achieve it, and the facilities and practices that satisfy the requirements of established guidelines and regulations. It is intended as guidance and should not be considered an authoritative source.

Additional information, as well as online and downloadable formats, is available on the Greenhouse Manual Page.

Proceedings of ISB Workshop on
Criteria for Field Testing of Plants with Engineered
Regulatory, Metabolic and Signaling Pathways

June, 2002
ISB sponsored a workshop on Criteria for Field Testing of Plants with Engineered Regulatory, Metabolic and Signaling Pathways held in Washington, DC, on June 3-4, 2002. The workshop was intended to promote a multidisciplinary discussion about field testing and management of plants that contain the "newer," more complex genes emerging from plant genomics projects. Additional information, as well as online and downloadable formats, is available on the Proceedings Page.

Printed copies are available by completing the Request Form below. Check the box titled "Proceedings: Criteria for Field Testing of Plants with Engineered Regulatory, Metabolic and Signaling Pathways". The Proceedings is free of charge.

Proceedings of ISB Workshop on
Ecological Effects of Pest Resistance Genes in Managed Ecosystems
February, 1999

The workshop on Ecological Effects of Pest Resistance Genes in Managed Ecosystems was organized to promote multidisciplinary discussions that would lead to a synthesis of what we already know, and what we don’t know, regarding the environmental impact of pest resistant crops. In so doing, the workshop provided an opportunity to reexamine a key issue related to the responsible development and use of agricultural biotechnology products.

The workshop focused on seven groups of crop species that have weedy relatives in North America: berries, certain grains and grasses, poplar, sunflower, squash, and Brassica species. Additional information, as well as online and downloadable formats, is available on the Proceedings Page

Printed copies are available by completing the Request Form below. Check the box titled "Proceedings: Ecological Effects of Pest Resistance Genes in Managed Ecosystems". The Proceedings is free of charge.
